Crown Chevrolet…

I found out about the possibility of Crown Chevrolet closing through a friend who had a relative who worked there.  So I paid the dealership a visit and asked if it were ok if I contacted our state and federal elected officials. The employee at the customer service desk gave me the phone numbers of the manager and the store owner.  In addition I later learned that the employees started a petition for members of the community to sign.  The following documents and correspondence serves as an example of how one community pulled together to save 11 jobs and is one of the proudest moments in my time as a City Alderman, it is for these reasons that I ran for office , to help make a difference.

Representative Keeney:

Hon. Representative Shelly Keeney,

I am writing from Marble Hill, Missouri where we just found out Crown
Cheverolet will soon be closing its doors.

I have talked to the manager and the owner and found that while Crown
survived the initial GM dealership cuts, they soon found that GMAC
refused to continue to loan them money for their floor plan.

Crown then went to local banks and found that they could not offer help.

With no other alternative Joe Scott, owner of the dealership had no
other choice but to send a termination of dealership letter to GM.

Ironically several days after he sent the letter a local bank contacted
him and said they would finance the money for his floor plan.

Scott does not believe that GM will let him rescind the letter.

I am asking will you please intervene in this situation. Marble Hill is
a small community of 1500 people. 12 jobs will be lost, and much tax
revenue will disappear as well.

Mr. Scotts number is: 314-542-2407

If something is not done our rural communities are going to blow away
like the tumbleweeds of the Western plains.

Thank You for taking time to read this,
Sincerely,
Clint E. Lacy

Mr. Lacy,

Thank you for calling this to Rep. Keeney’s attention.

I have also forwarded your email to Congresswoman Emerson’s office, to
see if they might be able to inquire about this from the federal level.

I have written a letter, and the City of Marble Hill has written a letter addressed to GM expressing the importance of keeping Crown Chevrolet open in Marble Hill.  The Bank of Missouri has agreed to provide financing and the owner of the establishment, Mr. Joe Scott is attempting to get the termination letter he sent to GM rescinded.

What would be extremely helpful right now is a letter from your office, as well as our other elected officials detailing the economic impact of the dealership closing in Marble Hill.

You can call Mr. Joe Scott at: 314-542-2407 or the dealership at: 573-238-2637 and they will provide a fax number for you to send the letter to.

Thank You for your prompt response as time is of the essence

the business open now that it believes floor plan financing is
available?

Contact number for Mr. Scott, the owner, is below if you need more

 Attention: General Motors Corporation

REFERENCE: The Continuation of Crown Chevrolet, 100 Conrad St., Marble Hill, MO

On behalf of Crown Chevrolet, Inc. and the dealership’s owner, Mr. Joe Scott, please do not accept or process the recent termination letter Mr. Scott sent to General Motors due to the fact that his business situation has changed since that earlier date. I hope you can understand that, when GMAC terminated the financial floor plan arrangements, he submitted a letter to your company out of desperation. Almost immediately after that date, however, he learned that he could indeed secure financial backing from a local bank for the necessary floor plan coverage.

The local bank and its administration, I am sure, understand the impact that the closure of this viable business would have on our community. It would severely affect local employment, local services for businesses, truly diminish city and county tax revenue to run the municipal and county entities, as well as funding through property taxes for the school system.

This business is a definite asset to the community. I, too, as a legislator of this area recognize that this business, reinstated to its former-full capacity, is desperately needed so this area and its population is not further reduced when it comes to employment opportunities and economic viability. Losing a business in a small town is definitely devastating!

Please contact me if I can be of any assistance as GM considers this situation.

Sincerely,

Shelley Keeney

State Representative

On July 31’st , 2009  The Mayor and the Board of Aldermen met with the manager of Crown Chevrolet Mr. Moyers, and the owner Mr. Scott.  Mr. Scott stated that he could not believe the amount of community support to keep Crown Chevrolet open citing letters from Representative Keeney and Representative Emerson
that had been written to support Crown Chevrolet.

August 14, 2009  2:39 pm

Alderman Lacy,

We at the Missouri Department of Economic Development understand the importance of rural automobile dealerships and their impact on the local community.

After reading the email, it appears that Crown Motors met
the floor plan upgrade requirements that GM had demanded for it
continued support as a qualified dealer.

After consulting our automotive industry specialist, we recommend that Crown Motors immediately call their representative at the Automobile Dealers Association.

I have attached the contact information of the private association.

Sam Barbee, Executive Vice President of the Missouri Automobile    Dealers Association.
3322 American Ave.,

Jefferson City, MO 65109

We hope this information is helpful.

On August 17,2009  I received a phone call from Mr. Moyers, manager of Crown Chevrolet, who informed me that General Motors was going to allow them to stay in business.  Special thanks goes to the employees of Crown Chevrolet, the owner Joe Scott, the Citizens of Marble Hill and Bollinger County, the Mayor and my fellow Board of Aldermen members, Representative Keeney and Representative Emerson for never giving up!  Perhaps this will lead to a new era in our community. It just goes to show you that when a community sticks together, good things happen.
